Took a spontaneous ride tonight. Sram’s NX derailleur is made of tin foil & prayers, I’m gonna need to learn how to adjust it myself because taking it to the shop every couple months to get it adjusted is a waste of time and money.
It’s also probably time for a fork rebuild, but I don’t know if I want to put the money into a Recon or just save and upgrade to something nice at the end of the summer.
My dropper post also seems to have a slow airleak and is struggling to return to full height every time. I could service it...but I’ve also been thinking about how nice a fox transfer with kashima coating would match the bike...

Yesss! More bikes!
Forks should be serviced every 60-100 hours of ride time. This varies by fork, useage, and ride style/user weight. Expect $60-80 for a decent service on most air forks.
I highly recommend.you learn to make some minor derailleur adjustments, it will go a long way. Keeping your shift cables and chain clean and lubricated will help you greatly too.
Dropper posts take air just like a shock or fork. Be sure t to check the pressure of it with a shock pump. There is a recommended PSI per your make/model post.

Yay bikes! I can’t wait till the trails open around here. Riding the new mountain bike around town isn’t much fun.

Yeah last time this one got rebuilt was a little less than a year ago, I don’t put a ton of miles in but I’m pretty sure its time. My internal debate is whether to sink money into a low end air fork, or should I ride the piss out of it a couple more months and get something much nicer like a fox 34 performance or a revelation.
I really really need to do better about cleaning and lubing my chain, my last one died an early death (6 months in) for that very reason.
In august I was having similar problems with the dropper , so I took the seat off and found I was like 100 psi low. N ow I’m having problems again which tells me I’m having an air leak which probably means I need to service it, probably new seals.

Derailleurs aren’t that hard to adjust. It takes a little bit of practice and can be time consuming at first as you figure out how to fiddle with it, but it goes quick once you get the hang of it. And if you do find it too much work instead of paying to have it fiddled with consider swapping out the SRAM driveline with Shimano XT. I think I’ve adjusted my XT maybe twice in 10 years.

Yes to more bikes!! And they are such simple machines too. Serious!
Derailleur adjustment is easy provided you follow a few simple rules.
Fork servicing is not always straight forward as a DIY but SRAM make it easier than most and the Recon is eminently rebuildable. Mind you, proper fork setup is even more important.
As for droppers...Bike Yoke Revive is the only one I'd contemplate.

We’re blessed (cursed more like it) with weather that allows trails open year round. Although this particular trail has been closed for MONTHS. Trails are built along the banks of rivers and bayous here to get a semblance of elevation change. Its been exceptionally rainy here since around September . There was a brief window where this one was open in November and some really heavy rain shut it down again.
Then because of lots of high water upriver the Brazos was in a flood stage for weeks. There was some serious erosion.

I’d love to swap to a shimano drivetrain but that starts to get real pricey real quick, not even considering hub/BB compatibility.

All these MTB posts from various oppos got me pretty psyched. Been spinning on a trainer in my basement since January.
I’ve got a Brand-X dropper from ChainReaction Cycles. It was $120. Seems to work pretty damn well and at that price point, won’t be too sad if it has a short life.
Kashimas are dope tho

Put that exact dropper on my wifes bike. pretty solid, flimsy lever though. Actually I have a TranzX on my bike which is just a re branded BrandX. The brand X seems like better quality though somehow. But mine came on my bike so no complaints.

True facts: the lever is shit. Absolutely

I’m still waiting for the snow to melt... I could ride the road as if today considering things in the valley are drying out.
I got this thing a couple weeks ago and am looking forward to getting it dirty. I haven’t had trouble with SRAM shifters but I also know how to do my own adjustments.

FWIF the shop told me the best upgrade is to get rid of the NX and get at least a GX derailure and shifter. One of their employees had an NX explode on her first ride and they have continued to have issues with NX with customers who actually ride their bikes.
